projects

NAWA strives to fund projects that benefit women and children. Here is a list of projects that we have supported.

Our applicants are reviewed in field visits like the one show to the right, where we funded the purchase of a machine needed to produce prosthesis.

In an effort to impact as many lives as possible, NAWA’s project team meets regularly to review applications for assistance from community groups all over Ghana.

Each project must meet the following guidelines:

  •      the project should primarily benefit women and children;
  •      it should have strong community support; and
  •      should eventually become self sustaining.

NAWA strongly supports projects stressing education and/or vocational education and health care. Click on our project profiles below to see how NAWA is making a difference in Ghana.

NAWA encourages projects that benefit the largest number of people, for instance, medical equipment or educational materials, rather than benefiting a few individuals.

Project Team members visit a potential project before funding to evaluate its viability and progress. These visits members direct and close contact with the community. The committee reports monthly to the general membership of NAWA, with input welcome from all.

Compassion for Humanity Foundation

Adowso, near Koforidua. Literacy and computer resource center for three local schools: voltage protection and repair of computer equipment.  The coordinator received training at the Osu Library Fund in library management and computer maintenance. CHF runs a resource centre in the old post-office building.  Programming includes health information, counselling, homework club, and a library with computer access.  Three local schools use the library and computers for their lessons during ICT and English classes.  NAWA assisted in repairing computers, stabilizing the electrical supply and linking CHF with the Kathy Knowles library for training in library management and computer maintenance. Amount: 1025 GHC

Mobility Foundation

Tamale District  Construction of toilet facility for teachers quarters and students of school in Tamale district.  This project consisted of building toilets and washing facilities for teacher’s quarters in a rural school in the area of Tamale in northern Ghana.  Providing appropriate facilities for teachers greatly improves the quality of teaching, bringing teachers closer to communities rather than commuting over large distances. Amount: 4000 GHC

Tsito Senior Secondary Library

Volta region near Ho Completion of Library construction, supported last year by NAWA with further assistance from MTN (5000 GHC). In 2009, NAWA paid for the roof of the Library.  The building still needed finishing with cement, windows and doors, electrical, etc. Hence in 2010, cooperation between NAWA and MTN is promising to finish the building.  Tsito has experienced a huge growth in attendance.  The current library was too small for their needs and served as book storage, leaving little room for students to study or access the books. 1000 GHC JaiNii Streetwise    Accra  Library construction for after school program on beach under James Town lighthouse (Accra). Jay works with local children by providing tutoring and homework help.   Many older children need help before they can join their classes.  After schoolwork is done, the children join in drumming and dancing on beach below James Town lighthouse with Nii and Jay.  The James Town community has donated money and volunteers to help build the beginnings of a library; NAWA is helping to complete it. Amount: 2500 GHC

past projects

W.I.S.E. Centre

Roman Ridge, Accra  The WISE Centre is a shelter for battered and abused women and children. In Ghana victims of abuse sometimes do not receive the help they need because they do not have the money to pay for their medical or physical needs. NAWA’s donation of $2,000 will help provide for the immediate medical and physical needs of WISE clients.

Kakpeni Primary School

Salaga, Northern Region  NAWA donated $1500 to this project aimed at repairing the physical building at a village primary school. The money has installed cement gutters around the mud block school in an effort to prevent further erosion. It also paid to plaster six mud classromms and complete a small house for two teachers that was already under construction.
